Warrior's Way with "Mad Max" Mullen
Known for being charismatic, MSG (Ret) Howard “Mad Max” Mullen served as an Army Ranger Instructor during the mid 80s and into the early 90s. He served in all three of the Ranger Battalions of the 75th Ranger Regiment and was inducted into the U.S. Army Ranger Hall of Fame in 2013. Max was also a distinguished member of the Ranger Training Brigade, a master parachutist (with CBT star) and co-authored the US Army Combatives manual. He has received an infinite amount of accolades throughout his career, including his Ranger rifle platoon having the highest number of EIB (Expert Infantry Badge) recipients out of any other platoon in the Regiment.
Throughout Max’s 26-year career, he served in a multitude of units:

- Co 1st Battalion Ranger 75th Infantry Regiment
- Co 2nd Battalion Ranger 75th Infantry Regiment
- Co 3rd Battalion Ranger 75th Infantry Regiment
- Charlie Company 4th Ranger Training Battalion
- 3rd Ranger Company “Morgan Team”
- HHC 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment (Air Assault), 2nd Infantry Division
- Co 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)
- HHC 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment “Rakkasans”, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault)
Though retired now, Max remains active in the tactical community, administers and edits Tactical MilSim Magazine and has also embraced his love of acting, recently playing the role of CIA Agent Duncan in the trailer for BLACK (a web series).
Max sat down with US Elite Gear’s Founder and CEO Steve Keefer for another edition of Warrior’s Way. He answered questions revolving around the topics of what makes him effective, what people don’t know about him, what he would tell his younger self and organizations he’s passionate about. Max has been a positive influence since the moment I met him. It’s not often you meet someone of his caliber and stature that is humble and approachable. He is the true Soldier of soldiers, a patriot, living by the Warrior’s ethos even when no one else is looking. The true sign of a true red blooded American Soldier. I am glad to know him and proud to call him friend.

Max Mullen is a Man’s Man in every sense of the word. A man of God first and foremost, a man who has no shame and backs down to no one telling people he loves God. A Born Leader in the toughest elite unit in the World, The United States RANGERS! Combat Veteran and Ranger Hall of Famer who has the heart of Gold and the soul of an Angel. Max Mullen is a Man you want to call Brother, Friend, Combat Buddy as he is all of these and then some as his greatness has no limits!
“Life is but a Vapor….” “Never Quit” Max Mullen epitomizes and lives the Ranger Creed everyday… he inspires those around him to be better and truly “sets the example for others to follow” Max’s ability to attack his goals with such passion and drive and yet also lend himself to mentoring others to achieve their goals is an outstanding quality that I truly admire in him. Max is a real life superman. I remember nearly 6 years ago….He invited me to do a chest workout with him. Here I am mid 20s, Thought i was in pretty good shape and this old man wants me to come workout with him. I was confident that this was going to be like a warm up workout… Man WAS I WRONG….I could not do anything for myself for 2days after… You would think that I was in an accident that broke all my bones….I have never seen strength and determination like this before. A true demonstration of BEASTMODE. Not only was he an amazing athlete but he was an incredible human being and When he walks in a room His positive energy and leadership Feels it up. I am PROUD TO KNOW YOU MY FRIEND
Max is a true American hero, not only through his impressive military career, but also how he supports his local and Ranger communities. I look forward to seeing more from Max here and seeing his recommendations on gear.
The story Max relates about Tom Greer demonstrates his ability to focus on the nuances that matter. Max is the consummate Ranger who embodies Abram’s Charter – the “constitutional” document which established the Ranger Battalion’s ‘direction of march". Max not only embodies that charter, but exhibits every standard established by The Ranger Creed in addition to daily displaying “the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger Objective”. "Mad Max’s" character, honorable Service and unimpeachable integrity has left a legacy within the Ranger Regiment inspiring the legion of Rangers to come to rise to his “Titan-like” level of professionalism and exhibit the “Spartan-esque” ethos Max inculcated within the fabric of the Ranger Regiment. It is indisputable that Max’s Ranger Service has left an indelible evolutionary imprint forever codifying the National impact of the Ranger Regimental Community.
MSG, Retired, “Mad” Max Mullen is a card carrying certified bad ass. He lives the Ranger Creed. He is a an example for all of us to follow. His character is stainless and his ethos is unmatched and undying. If he says you’re making good stuff for tactical use, then you’re making good stuff for tactical use. He is a subject matter expert. He sets the example for others to follow in everything he says and does.

Mad Max is the real deal.
Max is also one of the finest men I have ever known. He lives by the Warrior Code and will not hesitate to do anything for a brother or sister.
He is personable, humble and professional. If Max says it, he believes it.
It is one of the honors of my life to call Max a friend and a mentor. You don’t have to take my word for it either. I guarantee that if you make the effort to contact him, he will find the time to show you the same respect and display the same traits as he has shown me.
