Granite Gear was founded by Jeff Knight and Dan Cruikshank in 1986. It all started when they went on a paddling trip deep in the heart of Quetico. After a week of being in the wilderness, they discovered something about themselves, and how they wanted things to be. At such a time, Dan and Jeff began to build a fire, both literally and figuratively – that would evolve into Granite Gear. A fire that started with the idea that they could make gear that genuinely worked, and supported wilderness adventurers in the pursuit of discovering something about themselves.
Granite Gear spent over a year working on gear for TCCC (Tactical Combat Casualty Care) and developed a large array of products designed to help streamline the life saving process. They took their role very seriously always keeping in mind how important this gear is and the fact that seconds can save lives. Granite Gear was inspired to put everything they could into making the best kit possible!
Granite Gear focused on making every module a load that could be man carried comfortably for long distances if necessary and how best to package each piece of equipment for rapid deployment and a quick pack and dash. Since they have spent over 20 years developing both load carriage and packing systems they felt their experience made them the right team for this important work. To support these initiatives, Granite Gear had the honor of working with highly trained and experienced individuals who had all lived the life and put themselves on the line for our country and fellow soldiers and simply to do what was needed. These great individuals offered Granite Gear their experience and their insight into the reality of TCCC. They had many long brainstorming sessions tapping into decades of experience and in the process made what they believe will be lasting friendships.
